After our first season (well half a season) as a team playing competitive football, the girls did really well especially towards the back end of it, even getting a little winning streak going until we unfortunately lost our last game of the season.
The girls surpassed my expectations for the season and so we rested and started our preseason. We played a few games winning two and losing one and even entered a tournament at Common Edge in which we reached a semi final only just losing out on penalties.
We looked ready for the season and on Sunday we played our first game of the season. Having 14 girls available was a great start and gave me some selection headaches but we started off on the front foot against a good Penwortham side.
We got a goal in the first half from Macey with a strong finish from just outside the box into the bottom corner and got to halftime 1-0 up. Second half, we started brightly, again passing the ball around and pressuring the opposition.
About halfway through the second half we were unlucky to concede a goal but the girls didn’t give up. They pushed and pushed and were rewarded 5 minutes from the end. Some great link up play from Macey again set Mya free and she finished confidently from just inside the box.
A winning start from our first game this season and a great team performance all round. Ava, in goal, was brave and looked assured. In defence, Sophia, Anabelle, Phoebe, Sasha and Maisie were strong and limited the opposition to a few chances.
Our midfield of Indie, Mya and Macey didn’t stop running and were always there to link attack and defence. Our wingers, Cami, Ruby, Hope and Millie did brilliantly in trying to get behind the opposition defenders and gave options for their teammates and our striker Mia linked up well and was always a danger finding the right pass to our teammates with through balls.
Really proud of how the girls are getting on and looking forward to seeing how we get on in our first full season. Come on the Panthers!
